Determinants of Agricultural Productivity Growth in Sri Lanka: Study of Total Factor Productivity (TFP) Drivers

Chamilani Udatiyawala Arachchige

International Christian University, Japan

Sri Lanka’s agriculture sector, despite the favorable global factor: global blooming after 2000 and local factor: end of civil war in Sri Lanka in 2009, has experienced a subsequent declining trend since 2000. The agriculture sector contributes 7% to GDP and employment over 30% and reports highlight that 30% of Sri Lankans face acute food insecurity; 6.3 million people moderately to severely affected. Therefore, agriculture productivity is vital for economic growth in developing nations like Sri Lanka and it plays a significant role in poverty reduction, equality and sustainable solution for food insecurity.

This research investigates the factors of agriculture productivity in Sri Lanka between 2000 to 2022. It covers a diverse spectrum of different crops and examines various input factors.

By utilizing the Cobb-Douglas Production Function as the foundational framework, the study examines the relationship between multiple input factors: research and extension, access to credit, government expenditure, labor, access to land, machinery and equipment, intermediate inputs (fertilizer, seed, pesticide, weedicide) and gender with Total Factor Productivity (TFP) growth of diverse crops and patterns. With use of Torn Quist Theil index method as empirical methodology, research analyses the significance of various inputs factors and variety of crops in agriculture productivity in Sri Lanka.

"Why Can AIRBNB Shape Geopolitics in Mexico? The Geoeconomic Implications of Gentrification in Mexico

Luis Eduardo Montes Cruz

Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, México

This article delves into the impact of AIRBNB on the housing agenda for high-income individuals and the resulting displacement, particularly the surge in rental prices in major Mexican cities. It explores how these repercussions signify the geo-economic influence wielded by a private organization over a country's national sovereignty and individual citizens' housing rights. The analysis employs a mixed approach, considering variables like rental prices, mortgage loan demand, and housing policies to comprehend the gentrification phenomenon. The research aims to provide a diagnostic assessment of existing policies regulating the issue and proposes alternatives amidst the challenges posed by globalization and the influx of high-income individuals. The focus is on transforming these circumstances from a threat into an opportunity for local governments to effectively manage.

The article's novelty lies in acknowledging that gentrification has gained prominence, partly due to policies encouraging its emergence. It briefly surveys Mexico's housing context, highlighting how economic deregulations have complicated home acquisition and led to a decline in affordable housing production. Ultimately, the goal is to emphasize the need for comprehensive policies that not only address the negative consequences of gentrification but also harness its potential benefits. By recognizing the evolving housing landscape, the article advocates for proactive measures to ensure housing remains accessible and equitable in the face of global trends and economic shifts.

The Pacific Alliance: an avant-garde type of international cooperation and regional integration in Latin America

Dr. Carlos Gabriel Arguelles Arredondo

Universidad del Mar, Mexico

The central objective of this presentation is to analyze the most important characteristics of the Pacific Alliance and how the mechanism is constructed as a key instrument of the type of integration it represents and how it cooperates in Latin America. Thus, cooperation occurs based on interaction, therefore, the greater the cooperation, the greater the integration. The central argument of this work is that the Pacific Alliance since 2011 is explained by the fact that it is a different paradigm in terms of the type of regional integration that is, the partners seek to collaborate on issues beyond tariff reduction and free trade. For this reason, the Pacific Alliance's goals are the economic, social, and political development of Latin America in matters of trade, education, social affairs, science, and technology. With these objectives in sight, the integration of Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru must seek to resolve the challenges that the region faces internally and externally. Also, the Alliance is a form of South-South and North-South cooperation, since from the beginning this process of deep integration has the objective of building bridges with the Asia-Pacific bloc and being able to compete with other regions for harmonious development, not only of the Pacific Ocean but on a regional and global scale.

Foundations, Realities, and Challenges of Internationalization in Colombia: The Constitution of 1991 and Its Thirty-Year History

Prof. Jose Luis Niño Amézquita

Ean University, Colombia

Territorial internationalization is a practice that would have been impossible to implement in Colombia under the constitutional framework that existed before 1991. Nevertheless, the implementation of constitutional initiatives to promote inward territorial entities and facilitate international links has given freedom and strengthened local actors’ interaction with global peers based on common interests. This starting point, however, and the development of these practices over the last three decades have opened up new challenges for sub-national entities, in conjunction with national ones, to make the most of the capacities of each of Colombia’s territories and the infinite possibilities that exist within the international order for their development.
