Voted In and Voted Out: The Recent Elections and the Foreign Policy of Populists

Chair(s): Prof. Erica Resende (Brazilian War College), Prof. Anna Wojciuk (University of Warsaw)

Presenter(s): Prof. Miriam Gomes Saraiva (Rio de Janeiro State University), Prof. Renata Duda (University of Wrocław), Dr. Daniel Wajner (Hebrew University of Jerusalem)

The aim of this roundtable is to discuss and evaluate the foreign policies or foreign policy programmes of populists who have recently been voted out of power, as well as those who have been voted into power, or who may return to power in the near future. Participants will discuss the cases of Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, Law and Justice in Poland, who lost the elections and the winners: Javier Millei in Argentina and Geert Wilders in the Netherlands. We will also discuss the foreign policy programme of the (possible) second Donald Trump presidency. Are international issues important in election campaigns? Are there similarities between the losers and the winners? Are there any trends or patterns in their foreign policy behavior? What role did foreign policy issues take in their electoral campaign?
