Informatization Incentives and Pollution: Firm-level Evidence from China Ma Yinchu School of Economics, Tianjin University, China Information technology (IT) holds immense potential to facilitate technical upgrading and green transition, yet the environmental implications of related industrial policies remain underexplored. Exploiting a pilot program in China designed to foster IT penetration across the industrial sector, this study examines the impact of informatization incentives on firm-level pollution emissions. We find that the program leads to substantial reductions in firm emissions, driven primarily by technical effects. The emission reductions are more pronounced among firms with medium-to-high productivity, loose credit constraints, large size, and those in light-polluting industries. A plausible mechanism behind this cleanup is induced IT investments, which prompt firms to adopt more efficient and cleaner production processes, while concurrently enhancing their abatement efficiency. Alternative channels, such as additional investments in abatement facilities or green technologies, appear negligible. Overall, this study illuminates how informatization incentives shape firms’ technology adoption, production processes, and emission behaviors, providing critical policy insights for industrialized economies navigating the dual mandates of digital and green transitions. | |
