The Role of Time and Risk Preferences in Support for Solar Radiation Modification 1: Appalachian State University, United States of America; 2: University of Wyoming; 3: Center for International Climate Research - Oslo (CICERO) We conduct a national survey of U.S. residents (n = 1,022) that elicits individual time and risk preferences, using established methods from experimental economics, as well as support for both emission mitigation policies and stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI). While emissions mitigation is typically framed as a long-term investment, SAI offers the promise of near-term climate relief, but with potential risks. Consistent with our hypotheses, we find evidence that individuals with higher discount rates (those that place more value on near-term outcomes) are relatively more supportive of SAI than those with lower discount rates. We also find that individuals with higher risk tolerance are more supportive of SAI and less supportive of emissions mitigation policies. Our results demonstrate how time and risk preferences, often overlooked in climate policy research, shape public support across climate policies. | |
