(Workshop) Reviewing and publishing for early career researchers: a bridge towards scholarly expertise
Chair(s): Behnam Taebi (TU Delft), Diana Adela Martin (University College London, United Kingdom)
Workshop description
Publishing and reviewing are an important part of academic work. Peer-review is essential for evaluating and strengthening the research conducted and submitted for publication by one’s peers, while also helping reviewers gain a better understanding of the standards of academic publishing and develop themselves as authors. Being a fair and rigorous reviewer means being a valuable member of a discipline and academic community. Nevertheless, the process of publishing and reviewing can be daunting when first approaching it.
The workshop aims to introduce the audience to the publishing process in Science and Engineering Ethics and the role of peer review. This session will include real-world examples, interactive activities, and discussions with members of the Science and Engineering Ethics editorial team, which will provide participants with practical strategies for publishing in the journal and conducting constructive reviews. Facilitators will be members of the editorial team attending the conference.
The target audience are early career researchers (doctoral and postdoctoral researchers) new to publishing and peer-reviewing, as well as faculty members at other career stages looking to enhance their reviewing skills and knowledge of the publication process.
Objectives
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1) Gain awareness of the aims, scope, review criteria and publication process of the journal Science and Engineering Ethics.
2) Identify the roles of authors, reviewers, and editors in the peer review process.
3) Apply review criteria to evaluate the quality of a manuscript.
4) Understand what counts as providing constructive feedback and recommendations that help authors improve their manuscripts.
5) Navigate ethical considerations and avoid common pitfalls in peer reviewing.
6) Incorporate these best practice insights into their own authorial practices

10 min: Presentation of the roles of authors, reviewers, and editors in academic publishing
15 min: Plenary discussion with the audience on their own experience with publishing, receiving and writing reviews, the challenegs encountered or questions they might have about the process
