From "What?" to "So What?": How to Make an Impact with Your Research Paper 1: Arup; 2: National Laboratory of the Rockies; 3: Colorado School of Mines Are you presenting a scientific paper at SimBuild? Do you want people to read your paper and use your findings to change the world? This highly interactive session will teach you what makes some scientific papers highly engaging — and why many aren’t — and let you practice talking about your research in a way that will motivate others to take interest. In this session, we will form small groups led by experienced researchers and authors to discuss your research. We will attempt to move from discussing “what” your research paper contains to “so what?” Why did you do the work? Who is its intended audience? Why should they care? Through this process, we will help you develop a short elevator pitch for your research, succinctly explaining the value of your research in plain language that anyone can understand. Throughout the process, you will receive tips to help make your next research paper more impactful. At the end of the session, participants will be invited to share their elevator pitches in front of the group, with prizes available to the most compelling pitches. | ||
