What do we Make of AI in Building Design and Operation?

Jianli Chen1, Anna Jean Morton Rivera2

With the advent of large language models (LLM)(ChatGPT as an example), knowledge work will likely experience a sea change. Specific to buildings, LLM AI has demonstrated its potential in supporting advanced building modeling and management practice, such as data-driven approaches to estimate building energy use, and data-driven model predictive control for smart building operation. However, the application of LLMs to enhance buildings is still very limited. It is unclear if this technology will displace building performance professionals, and to what extent it may create equity and legal issues. This session will give participants space to explore the benefits and risks of applying LLM AI to building performance. To start, an overview of LLM AI will be provided including recent research and advancement related to Building Performance. Participants will then vote on specific discussion topics related to LLM AI. Each topic will be discussed in a small group format and then shared with the whole session. A desired outcome of this session is to create a working group on how LLM AI can help advanced building modeling and management as well as what is the optimal pathway to supporting building development practice.
