Building Nightmares

Based on Kitchen Nightmares, but for buildings. This session will present a number of real world building nightmares scenarios/stories when something, or many things, went wrong in the design, modeling, construction, commissioning, or operation of a building. Each scenario will be based on 1-2 slides with photos or drawings and supporting text to provide further context of location and environmental conditions found at the building. The presenter of each nightmare scenario will provide a longer narrative beyond what is on the slide. Attendees will try to guess the cause of the condition and can also suggest how it should be fixed. Scenarios may show condensation, thermal images, or pictures of equipment. We will have 2-4 guest presenters with 2-5 quizzes each. After the cause of each scenario is announced the presenter will give more background on how this happened, how it was addressed, and if there are strategies to avoid it happening in the future. While a fun exercise, it also highlights the need to think beyond just modeling to implementation in the real world conditions.
