Indigenous Wisdom and Building Science

For thousands of years, North America was inhabited by millions of people who lived carbon neutral or carbon negative lifestyles. Native Americans constructed shelter with naturally sourced, local materials, to achieve the best performance and thermal comfort for the inhabitants. They used naturally occurring fuels, passive strategies, and consistently had clean water to drink.

With the onset of Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book, Braiding Sweetgrass – Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teaching of Plants, scientists and environmentalists are inspired to bridge modern science with thousands of years of wisdom. We can also look at places like Newgrange in Ireland, a building standing for over 5000 years in Europe, Machu Picchu in South America, and even the practice of Feng Shui in Asia to link analysis with the built environment.

This panel will look at building performance in a different light and seek to answer the related questions. What can we incorporate into our building performance practices or lifestyles to align with indigenous wisdom? What can we learn from the shelters and structures of thriving societies throughout history? How can we go beyond just stating a land acknowledgement at conferences and events? Can we create analytical models of indigenous buildings? If we were born on this continent 550 years ago, how would our core values be expressed with the built environment and natural world, as we do now in our careers fostering better buildings?

The panel will bring their knowledge, experience, and wisdom to look at the intersectional nature of building performance throughout history, present, and into the future.
