AMS Music and Dance Study Group Business Meeting with Short Papers Organized by the AMS Music and Dance Study Group. The first half of the Music and Dance Study Group business meeting, lasting roughly fifty minutes, will be dedicated to short lightning talks. In connection with the virtual meeting, we draw on themes that respond to virtual and constrained movement practices and expressions. The events of 2020, including the COVID-19 pandemic, engendered discourses around (dis)embodied virtual practices. As individuals increasingly turned to online spaces, the formation of stable and fluid movement communities brought about questions of choreography, relationality, and geographies (both online and offline). Following the work of digital performance scholars, we ask what affordances and constraints the ‘telematic’ and the ‘networked’ may offer (Santana 2014, Popat 2021). To these ends, we will feature lightning talks that draw on themes and questions such as: How do movements become cloistered or distinct in isolation? How might studies of early music + movement practices interact/interplay with virtuality? What constraints or opportunities come from virtual or remote dance sessions? How does videography frame dance performance, practice, or installation? The second half of this meeting, lasting roughly forty minutes, will take care of the business pertinent to running the study group, including elections of new officers, review of funds, discussion of future plans, and the approval of minutes. | |
