Music and Animation (Global East Asian Music Research Business Meeting & Lightning Talks) Organized by the AMS Global East Asian Music Research Study Group. The traditional center of East Asian animation studies has been Japanese anime—animation produced primarily within Japan. In recent years, however, this conception has expanded, as more animated works from other East Asian countries have found global audiences. At the same time, Japanese anime itself has reached new audiences in Chinese- and Korean-speaking markets as well as Southeast Asia, and has created co-productions to speak to these audiences. Moreover, the increasing popularity of East Asian popular music, particularly K-pop, has found global audiences that include animators from around the world, including those in the Asian diaspora who have given us works like K-pop Demon Hunters (2025). The Annual Study Group 10-minute lightning talk panel will approach the question of “Music and Animation” broadly—both in examining relationships between preexisting East Asian or Asian-diasporic music and animated film works, and in looking at different ways that East Asian or diasporic animation works have used music. Karen Cook will present a paper titled “Nickelodeon, Anime, and Music in the 1980s” and Thomas B. Yee will present a paper titled “Anime Appropriation: Exoticizing K-Pop in Tower of God and Solo Leveling”. “Animation” is understood to encompass a variety of works that involve moving illustrations and stop-motion, from film and TV animation to video games, music videos, and new media. The business meeting will culminate with an election for a new co-chair to serve a three-year term (2027–2030) alongside Rose Bridges. The current co-chairs welcome nominations prior to or during the 2026 business meeting. | |
