Thermal Hydraulics Simulation Developments and Applications for Advanced Reactors

Nuclear energy generation plays an important role in the European energy mix. This is expected to be continued in the near future. In several countries, plans for nuclear new build are coming to realisation. This mostly comprises traditional water cooled reactors at relatively low temperature levels and with an open fuel cycle. For a sustainable nuclear energy production and to enable higher temperature levels, a transition to advanced reactors will be compulsory. Such advanced reactors with elevated operating temperatures include high temperature gas cooled reactors (HTGR), liquid metal fast reactors (LMFR), and molten salt reactors (MSR). This paper will describe the research and development directions in thermal hydraulics simulations focusing on the reactor types mentioned. The scope will be limited to system thermal hydraulics and computational fluid dynamics simulations. Illustrating this, recent developments will be shown which form the basis of the future developments.
