Session Abstract
"We will present on the applications of VR (virtual reality) technology in teaching and research, drawing from several international projects conducted by a joint US-Georgian team from Bridgewater State University (USA) and Ilia State University (Republic of Georgia). These projects include SIMuR: Shiraki International Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research (NSF International Research Experience for Students, 2019-24), The Crossroads Virtual Museum – Bringing Cultural Heritage Protection to Classrooms (US Embassy Democracy Commission Small Grant 2023-24), and the Ateni Virtual Museum (USAID Georgia, 2024).
Our focus will be twofold: key VR technologies—Photogrammetry, VR headsets, online VR platforms, and 3D/VR data exchange formats — and their applications, such as surveying and documentation, VR reconstructions of artifacts and archaeological sites, historical environment modeling, and advanced 3D data analysis methods. Special attention will be given to the VR Museum and VR Classroom concepts as contemporary, accessible tools for education and research."
