A game by its very design can reframe the meaning, focus and interpretation of an otherwise heavy or complex issue. This workshop will facilitate participants as they play the interactive online Multiplayer game, New Shores for Democracy. In this game, participants balance short-term individual gains with shared responsibility for common resources on a pristine island. The game was created by the System Solutions Center with a grant from the European Union and there are accompanying pedagogical materials meant for classroom use. Post game discussion will be focused on how games can provide a platform for discussion of complex issues in the classroom, such as how individual versus collective decisions impact the common good within contemporary environmental contexts. Participants should bring a smartphone or laptop with wifi capacity in order to participate in this game. Observers are also welcome.
