Advancing technology, evolving pedagogy, shifting student expectations, increased emphasis on inclusivity and mental well-being, and ideals of a holistic academic experience create unprecedented challenges for educators. Further, educators may feel pressure to inflate grades, and rigorous writing may give way to simple PowerPoint-style communication. “E-memory” removes the necessity to memorize or retain information, and the use of AI in the academy remains to be defined. Are we pushing too hard to change classrooms in response to societal factors but at the same time falling short in capacity to work hard, learn from mistakes, skillfully engage in face-to-face communication, and constructively engage in disagreement in pursuit of greater good? Are college students ready for the workforce, or do they risk losing agency, community, and courage to try new ideas because they are usually able to edit everything before hitting send. This roundtable will explore multiple influences of changes in college classrooms.
