Qubes OS: UX In the Service of Security Qubes OS Project / Invisible Things Lab Gmbh, Germany In this presentation, I want to discuss how Qubes OS, a security-focused operating system created for power users and high-risk users, attempts to reconcile the potential conflict between usability and security. There is often a tension between what is considered good UX (frictionless, easy, does not make the user think) and good security (ponderous, deliberate, limiting). In Qubes OS, I am working on reconciling that tension and making security less of a chore while at the same time not frustrating user wants and not decreasing control the user has over their digital environment. I will discuss how Qubes OS uses UX techniques to reinforce security boundaries and good practices and show deliberate use of friction together with attempts to resist user habituation to it. | |
