Planning a Research Agenda: Sound Strategies for Faculty and Future Faculty

Chair(s): Esther Criscuola de Laix (A-R Editions)

Presenter(s): Carol Hess (University of California, Davis), Ayana Smith (Indiana University), Jennifer Saltzstein (Indiana University), Christine Getz (University of Missouri–Kansas City)

Organized by the AMS Committee on Career-Related Issues.

A coherent research agenda is a necessity for all scholars in academic positions, whether they are faculty members seeking tenure or promotion within their department, recent graduates seeking new tenure-track positions, or established scholars with a publication history. During this session, administrators and tenured faculty will present strategies for crafting an effective research agenda (including the use of the Individual Development Plan [IDP] framework); demystify the processes by which research agendas are evaluated; address common setbacks; and illuminate the ways administrators and faculty (or future faculty) can work together to prepare for career milestones. With brief presentations from each of the panelists addressing different facets of this topic (ten minutes each, for forty minutes total), followed by questions and discussion (during the last fifty minutes), the session will help scholars at all levels develop viable strategies for attaining their professional goals.
