AMS Global East Asian Music Research Annual Business Meeting

Elina Hamilton

University of Hawai'i, Mānoa

Organized by the AMS Global East Asian Music Research Study Group.

The Global East Asian Music Research Study Group supports music scholars who study any aspect of music related to East Asian nations or the East Asian diaspora. For our seventh annual business meeting, we especially invite graduate students and junior scholars to join us for a round-table discussion on three major issues: research, skills, and teaching.

David Wilson will discuss experiences of accessing archives in East Asia, sharing tips and insights on how to devise sustainable and flexible research projects, as well as how to build the language skills needed to access these resources. Heeseung Lee will discuss the challenges and nuances of translation in both narrow and broader contexts, while offering insights into transitioning from a Euro-centered scholarly background to the study of East Asian subjects. Elina Asato Hamilton will discuss how Western classical compositions from East Asia can be incorporated into the collegiate music history curriculum by exploring resources widely available in English.

The business meeting will culminate with an election for a new co-chair to serve a three-year term (2025–2028). David Wilson was nominated as a candidate in the 2024 Chicago meeting but the current co-chairs welcome any additional nominations prior to or during the 2025 business meeting.
