Mastering the Art of the Abstract

Chair(s): Stella Zhizhi Li (RILM)

Presenter(s): Stella Zhizhi Li (RILM)

This 60-minute workshop led by Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale (RILM) focuses on strategies and techniques for crafting effective abstracts in the field of music studies for conference papers, publications, and grant proposals. The workshop aims to help participants develop a clear understanding of the qualities that reviewers, editors, and researchers seek in an abstract, as well as an awareness of the role of abstracts as searchable metadata in online databases. Participants will obtain strategies for crafting abstracts with an emphasis on clarity, conciseness, and accessibility. These are shared through discussions of effective writing styles, examples of successful abstracts, and opportunities to ask questions based on individual experiences and objectives. Depending on the number of attendees, the session may also incorporate practical exercises, allowing participants to draft or revise an abstract with feedback from peers or RILM staff.

The workshop is designed for graduate students and other junior scholars, as well as scholars writing in English as a second language, interdisciplinary researchers, and prospective students. The workshop will be directed by Associate Editor Stella Zhizhi Li and assisted by other RILM staff as needed.
