Pentatonicism in Jazz: An Analysis of Anhemitonic Pentatonicism’s Affordances for Dissonance throughout Jazz Styles University of California, Irvine The anhemitonic pentatonic collection appears pervasively throughout the jazz canon. This paper analyzes the collection’s role in both composition and improvisation as it achieves unique dissonance through its historical consonance. Drawing on pentatonicism’s omnipresent familiarity throughout global history, jazz musicians exploit its sonic properties to create modern, dissonant sonorities. This paper first documents pentatonic applications in composed melodies, including Duke Ellington’s "In a Sentimental Mood," Thelonious Monk’s "I Mean You," and Nat Adderley’s "Work Song.” Blues applications of pentatonicism then receive significant focus, examining the minor pentatonic mode’s close relationship with the “minor blues scale” as found in tunes such as Sonny Rollins’s "Sonnymoon for Two" and Milt Jackson’s "Bag’s Groove." The paper further explores distinct pentatonic melodic closures, such as the 6-1 cadence, sometimes referred to as the "plagal leading tone,” (Day O’Connell 2007). Alongside the linear realization of pentatonic melodies, this paper considers their relation to the harmonies over which they sound as the collection produces characteristic chord extensions. Beyond aural familiarity, the anhemitonic pentatonic collection’s regular appearance in jazz is also seen as a byproduct of its interface efficiency. While the piano interface is built around an anhemitonic pentatonic structure (the black keys), it is the guitar interface that particularly affords musical vocabulary stemming from pentatonic material as evidenced through style analysis and practitioner-theory. The collection is generally inefficient on the horns common to jazz, and so cognitive considerations explain the prevalence of pentatonicism in jazz horn vocabulary. After hypothesizing why pentatonicism is prevalent throughout the jazz canon, we can then see how it is used as a vessel for dissonant expansion. Superimposition, wherein a pentatonic grouping is placed above a harmonic root other than its scalar root, and alteration (systematic deviation from anhemitonic pentatonic collections) are two means of achieving “out” sonorities through a pentatonic framework. After thorough analysis of musical material exemplifying superimposition and altered pentatonics, this paper validates the material's prominence through pedagogical proof. Method books and other theoretical offerings from jazz practitioners are looked to for evidence alongside existing academic scholarship in this study of jazz pentatonicism. “Newest Twelve-Tone Technique”: Walter Bishop, Jr.’s Fourth Cycles in Theory, Composition, and Jazz Improvisation University of Western Ontario, Canada In the mid-twentieth century, various musicians connected jazz with twelve-tone techniques. This blending characterized compositions by Oliver Nelson, Bill Evans, Gunther Schuller, and others, and tone rows appeared in Nelson’s Patterns for Improvisation (1966) and Yusef Lateef’s Repository of Scales and Melodic Patterns (1981). However, twelve-tone techniques tended to show up in composition more than improvisation. After all, how could a jazz musician effectively solo using a tone row? One answer can be found in the work of Walter Bishop, Jr. (1927–1998), whose business card once advertised his expertise in the “newest twelve-tone technique.” Bishop started his career as a bebop pianist, and from the late 1940s to the 1960s, he played with many prominent jazz musicians, including Art Blakey, Milt Jackson, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, and Charles Mingus. In the 1970s, he taught music theory at colleges in Los Angeles, studied “twelve-tone horizontal composition” with Lyle “Spud” Murphy, and developed the “fourth technique” that would become central in his theorizing, composition, and improvisation. This paper examines Bishop’s technique, drawing on his theoretical text A Study in Fourths (1976) and analyzing compositions and improvisations from his album Keeper of My Soul (1973). Bishop systematically investigated ascending and descending cycles of perfect fourths, noting that “the student of twelve-tone or serial technique will see that each descending cycle is the retrograde (reverse) as well as the inversion of its corresponding ascending cycle” (1976, 5). For each twelve-note cycle, the pitches are typically confined to a one-octave range, and such cycles may be combined or varied (e.g., by replacing notes with rests or adding “shifts”). Bishop also considered the harmonic implications of fourth cycles, as well as their embodied performance on various instruments. On Keeper of My Soul, he combined fourth cycles with other jazz idioms. Compositionally, he used these cycles in melodies and bass lines, and in his solos, they are a source of motives and musical goals. Ultimately, Bishop’s intervallic approach synthesized theory, composition, and improvisation, redeploying twelve-tone techniques to support his own intellectual and creative goals. Reading Harmony Situationally in a Corpus of Jazz Standards Mount Holyoke College, United States of America Geyer (2025) explores harmonic variability in jazz practice, identifying the challenge it poses to theory and analysis: “The problem is, chord changes change.” He develops a method for representing tunes that “reconcile[s] the importance of chord changes…with their flexibility in practice” by dividing tunes into “fixed” and “variable” zones. But his study is limited to just one performance. In this paper, I expand on this fixed/variable framework by applying it to a small corpus of jazz standards. To define the corpus, I consulted four tune lists compiled by musicians or writers and selected the 70 that appear on at least three of them. Publications range from 1914–1963, with 89% published from 1927–1947. The fixed–variable framework is baked into the transcription process: I listened to 5–15 versions of each tune and recorded only the chords played consistently across versions. This approach contrasts previous corpus studies of jazz standards, which have analyzed much larger data sets through the use of lead sheets but have not registered harmonic variation (Broze and Shanahan 2013, Salley and Shanahan 2016). Though I omit variable zones, the method clarifies their immediate context, as fixed zones guide and constrain how musicians treat them. I recorded each fixed harmony’s hypermetrical placement, root scale degree, and quality. I further distinguished chords of two coarse function types—“pillar chords” and “active chords.” For example, an active ii that participates in the ubiquitous ii–V functions differently from a tonicized ii, which functions as a pillar within a larger phrase. Foundational theories reference similar distinctions, with my pillars described as “stable harmonic goals” (Strunk 1979), the “tonicizations based on arrival points” (Martin 1988), and “strong structural points” (Larson 1998). Still, this active/pillar dynamic has not been fully developed as a central feature of jazz harmonic theory. What emerges is a “situational” reading of harmony that drills down into the specific behavior of each chord based on not just its quality, but also its local function. Ultimately, the corpus’s tune selection process, transcription style, and analytical frame make it a powerful lens onto jazz harmony as practiced by jazz musicians. | ||
