PediView: A Low-Cost Visual Screening Device for Early Amblyopia Detection in Rural Areas Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas - (PE), Perú Amblyopia, commonly known as “lazy eye,” is one of the leading causes of preventable visual impairment in childhood, requiring early screening to enable effective treatment and avoid permanent visual deterioration. In Peru, particularly in rural areas, limited access to specialized visual health services, scarce resources, and geographic barriers hinder timely visual assessments, increasing the risk of late diagnosis and long-term impact on children’s educational development and quality of life. In this context, primary schools emerge as strategic environments for initial visual screening due to their accessibility and continuous contact with the child population. This study presents PediView, a portable and low-cost visual screening device designed to support early amblyopia detection in children from rural areas of Peru. The system is intended for use by non-specialized users, such as teachers, and integrates a handheld optical viewer with an intuitive mobile application that enables standardized ocular image capture and basic visual assessment based on principles similar to the Hirschberg test. The design is grounded in industrial design principles, pediatric ergonomics, and technological accessibility, prioritizing usability, portability, and affordability. PediView is proposed as an orientative screening tool that does not replace medical diagnosis but facilitates the identification of visual warning signs and promotes timely referral to specialized health services, contributing to improved access to early visual screening in resource-limited settings. | |
