Hydrodynamic mass in a horizontal pipe partially filled with liquid 1: Universidad Tecnológica del Perú UTP - (PE), Perú; 2: Universidad de O'Higgins (UOH), Chile We present an experimental study on the hydrodynamic mass in a horizontal pipe partially filled with liquid. The pipe is configured as a free-free beam with small amplitudes of transverse oscillation and no-flow condition. Bending vibrations of the pipe in the vertical and horizontal planes are investigated for different amounts of filling liquid. In contrast with the empty and fully-filled pipe, it is observed that natural frequencies of the vertical and horizontal directions are different due to asymmetry induced by the liquid layer, which acts like an hydrodynamic mass. Less mass of liquid is added to the pipe when oscillating horizontally; as a consequence, natural frequencies for the horizontal direction are found to be greater than vertical direction. We use a classical method to calculate hydrodynamic mass coefficient based on natural vibration frequencies. Results show the hydrodynamic mass coefficient increases with the liquid's level. | |
