Session Overview
Date: Tuesday, 24/Aug/2021
2:00pm - 5:00pmWorkshop I: Guidelines for Resilient thermal energy systems design in extreme climates
Session Chair: Dr. Alexander Zhivov, US Army Engineer Research and Development Center
1. Planning for the second edition of the Guide for Resilient Thermal Energy Systems Design in Cold and Arctic Climate.
The first edition has been recently published by ASHRAE https://www.wbdg.org/ffc/army-coe/design-guides/guide-for-resilient-thermal-energy-systems-design-in-cold-and-arctic-climates. It has been developed primarily by the team from North America with participation from Denmark. Contributions from other Nordic countries are welcome to finalize the next edition by the Cold Climate HVAC and Energy conference planned for 2023.

2. Guide for Resilient Thermal Energy Systems Design in Cold and hot and humid climate. The Guide will be developed in 2021 and will include information on:
- Specifics of design in hot and humid climate, corrosive environment in coastal and high-water table in inland areas,
- Requirements for building thermal conditions under normal and emergency operations; - Parameters for thermal energy systems resilience;
- Building envelope, including considerations for foundation construction in areas with a high-water table and in corrosive environment, typical building archetypes, recommendations for thermal characteristics (mass, U-value, vapor, water and air- barriers)
- Best practices for HVAC, including considerations for construction in corrosive environment, humidity control, pros and cons of different technologies, O&M;
- Best practices for district cooling systems
- Evaluation of maximum time to repair

Speakers:
  • Ambra Guglietti, VELUX A/S
  • Susanne Højholt, Phønix Tag Materialer A/S
14:00 Welcome and Introduction
14:05 2 x 10-15 minutes pitches by each of the two companies on how they work with:
  • Environmental sustainability with buildings in perspective
  • Economical sustainability with buildings in perspective
  • Social sustainability with buildings in perspective
14:30 Group work. Zoom breakout rooms. Groups of 5 persons
We are already rather good at making healthy and sustainable buildings. So in light of contemporary Buildings physic knowledge on:
  • Heat (thermal conditions and energy efficiency)
  • Air (fresh but without draft)
  • Moisture (never too humid, but also not too dry)
what are the issues and what should be the next ambitions in providing buildings that are (even more) comfortable, healthy, resilient, and resource efficient?
Map opportunities and challenges, and report what it takes to harvest the benefits and minimize the potential risks. Think globally!
14:45 Main clues and conclusions from 5 selected group discussions (3 minutes each)
15:05 Open discussion (all workshop participants)
15:25 Closing words. What could building physics research and practice mean in this context.
15:28 Thank you and goodbye.
