No Need to Despair over the Standard Problem for the Standard Theory of Hope Goethe University According to the standard theory of hope, hope has two elements, a cognitive element and a conative element. It is now widely accepted that the standard theory of hope fails to distinguish hope from despair. In this talk, I will critically examine the focus theory of hope defended in Chignell (2023), which proposes a third element, the focus element, in order overcome this limitation of the standard theory. While promising, I will raise doubts about the focus theory of hope. Drawing on recent developments in zetetic epistemology, I propose an alternative understanding of the cognitive element. By reconceptualizing it in terms of inquisitive attitudes and question-settling, rather than beliefs about possibilities or probabilities, this revision delivers a variant of the standard account that can distinguish hope from despair without adding further elements.
