It seems appropriate to esteem parents for having and raising children, which suggests that there are reasons to have children that are not self-interested. This paper characterizes these reasons. I argue that there are reasons to have children that are neither self-interested nor moral. It is sometimes argued that the value of the human species generates reasons to have children in order to preserve the human species. Yet this view not only fails to illuminate our typical esteem for parents; it also faces the objection that such reasons are not concerned with what ultimately matters: individuals. I argue that there are non-self-interested reasons to have children that depend upon one's subjective appreciation of having a child, and I contribute to illuminating the more general idea that there are non-self-interested "reasons of love" that depend on one's subjective attraction. I develop a view of reasons of love according to which only individuals are worthy of love.
