Technology and Suicide Prevention: Evidence, Ethics and Future Directions 1: Middlesex University, United Kingdom; 2: University of Westminster, United Kingdom This talk examines the rapidly evolving role of technology in suicide prevention, focusing on what we know, what remains uncertain, and why this matters for policy and practice. Drawing on current evidence, ongoing research, and insights from people with lived and living experiences of suicide, it explores how technology-enabled interventions can support prevention efforts, while raising critical questions about accuracy, privacy, autonomy, and acceptability. Through a series of case studies, we will discuss how technology-based approaches are implemented in practice, situating them within broader systems of care and support, and systemic inequalities. Key knowledge gaps will be identified, outlining priorities for future research to strengthen understanding of implementation, impact, and outcomes across diverse contexts. Finally, we will reflect on future directions, including the growing influence of generative AI and large language models, and the need for robust safeguards to ensure innovation is evidence-informed, centred on the needs of those it seeks to support, and grounded in realistic expectations of what technology can achieve. | ||
