How might design contribute to a circular economy?
Mia Münster, Susan Evans, Sylvia Liu
Hong Kong Polytechnic University, School of Design, Hong Kong S.A.R.
The present linear economic model strains the limitations of our planet’s natural resources. The European Commission has noted that 80 percent of the environmental impact of products and services is determined in the design phase. Circular economy enables firms to reduce waste, emissions and consumption of natural resources, by changing the take-make-use-dispose paradigm to a practice that aims to keep materials in closed loops. In this discussion we put forward the question: How can designers practice in a more circular manner? 10 tips, to con-tribute to a Circular Economy, will be introduced and discussed in an open and active discussion. The conversation is intended to stimulate a discussion on the role of design in future circular business models.
