A marriage in practice: The role of design research in the world of science

Much has been written about the potential of combining design thinking and medical research in transdisciplinary collaboration. The translation from promise to practice has been extremely difficult.

For decades, design and medical research have been casually courting with varying levels of success. The potential partners face differences regarding how knowledge is produced, exchanged, funded, supported, and deemed successful. Like any relationship, they must negotiate hierarchical norms, inharmonious timeframes, and distinctive values.

The aim of this Conversation is a robust exchange with people who have been attempting to forge this marriage in design and healthcare contexts. Our transdisciplinary team’s experiences blending design and medical research to address the American opioids crisis will act as a springboard to a more general exchange. We will discuss the barriers to collaboration and the insights unlocked by acknowledging and finding value in the differences. By sharing successes and failures, conversation participants will surface better practices for deeper collaboration between scientists and designers.
