In this conversation we discuss the ways in which PhD programmes support candidates to become a PhD in Design. The conveners will present experiences from six established PhD in Design programmes at universities in Europe and USA, gathered in the Erasmus+ project 'DoCS4Design'.
The discussion consists of two parts: HOW and WHY. In the former, we look at how PhD education is organised through three lenses: People, Process, and Content, illustrate these with different practices at these schools. In the latter, the focus is on what characterises the PhD in design: is it an education to become an advanced designer or (disciplinary or interdisciplinary) researcher, is the research component about design, does it have to build on design skills from previous education. To support the participants, the brochure 'PhD in Design - a Map and Glossary' will be shared with participants, and published following the conference.
