Harnessing Emergent Digital Technologies to Facilitate North-South, Cross-Cultural, Interdisciplinary Conversations about Indigenous Community Identities and Cultural Heritage in Yucatán
1University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; 2University of California, San Diego; 3Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán
This panel brings together practitioners of digital humanities with backgrounds in history, anthropology, and film to discuss projects that embrace interdisciplinary perspectives in exploring cross-cultural conversations about indigenous identities and cultural heritage in communities spanning the north-south divide. Using digital technologies and interfaces, the three projects presented bring to light historical and contemporary indigenous experience in various communities in Yucatán, Mexico. Each of these projects engages with and thereby facilitates discussion about the production and appropriation of cultural heritage, North-South relationships between community members, foreigners, tourists, and academics; and digital interfacing and divides, among other topics.
