Session Abstract

There has been much important work in recent years to redefine what we teach in music theory courses and to address how the content and delivery method of our curricula connect to broader social structures. In this presentation, two professors will share how their work is contributing to our discipline’s curricular reimagining. Sarah Louden, director of the music theory and history program at NYU, will share her experience redesigning the core undergraduate music theory curriculum at her institution to incorporate a broader range of musical styles and parameters, global perspectives, and under-represented voices. She will demonstrate how their courses use Auralia & Musition as a tool to support “flipped” classrooms, provide multiple student pathways through the curriculum, and to improve student feedback and accessibility. Paula Maust, assistant professor of music theory at Peabody, will discuss her forthcoming book, ‘Expanding the Music Theory Canon’ (SUNY Press), which offers a framework for integrating common-practice-era music by underrepresented groups into the theory curriculum. She will also demonstrate some of the supporting workbook activities coming soon in Auralia & Musition. This presentation will provide valuable insights and practical suggestions for anyone interested in making their music theory courses more relevant, engaging, and inclusive.
