Session Abstract

The SMT Disability and Music Interest Group will host a SPECIAL SEMINAR, led by Mike Kinney and Joe Straus, on music at the intersection of age and disability. Age Studies and Disability Studies think of old age and disability in similar ways, as constructed in culture and society: old people and people with disabilities are similarly understood to inhabit extraordinary bodies, bodies that are stigmatized as deviating from the desirable norms for appearance and function.  Despite this similar approach, there has been relatively little work at the intersection of these two fields, as each group has sought to avoid the stigma associated with the other.  This seminar will invite us to think deeply and collaboratively about old age in relation to disability, and disability in relation to old age, as they bear on the study of music in all its aspects. We welcome auditors to come observe this seminar-style discussion, which will end with a chance for audience questions and comments.
