Session Abstract

The Timbre & Orchestration interest group invites all conference attendees to an interactive session, where participants will engage with new tools for analysis and pedagogy and discuss the roles of timbre and orchestration in curricular design.

 

Teaching Timbre Topics (TTT)

Kelsey Lussier and Lena Heng

Kelsey and Lena will share information on a new online resource designed to provide instructors with accessible teaching materials related to timbre and orchestration. Participants will work together in small groups to explore specific modules of the TTT, discuss possibilities for the classroom, and offer feedback.

 

Auralayer: An easy-to-use web app for visualizing instrumentation and timbre 

Megan Lavengood, Brian Jarvis, and Evan Williams

Megan, Brian, and Evan will demo a new web app, Auralayer, which creates timbral layer graphs from recordings to aid in teaching and analysis. Participants will be able to explore the program for themselves and offer feedback.

 

“Why” teach timbre? A guided conversation

Holly Bergeron-Dumaine

Holly will facilitate an interactive discussion on the relationship between teaching timbre/texture and curricular reconstruction, offering participants the opportunity to develop personalized strategies for curricular advocacy.
