This symposium will facilitate dialogue between established approaches to contrafacture in historical European repertoires and in global cultural contexts in which contrafacture is a thriving, living musical practice. The symposium will delve into the shared epistemological functions of musical borrowing, re-creation, and interpolation beyond circumstances of time, place, community, and/or musical genre. In each session, presenters will deliver 10-minute lightning talks, leaving time for prepared responses as well as a discussion of these techniques with attendees.
