Organized by the Skills and Resources for Early Musics Study Group.
As twenty-first century scholars, we recognize that speaking to the present as we seek to understand and interpret the past is a key skill in the study of early music. This session takes a historiographical approach, discussing our field’s commitment to broader concerns about inclusivity, the global Middle Ages, and inequality. In teaching and writing, how do we confront material at odds with our own cultural values? How can we expand our research questions and methods to allow for new perspectives, avenues of inquiry, and nuances in the familiar histories? We also interrogate our professional obligation to the field as we continue to build meaningful and responsible scholarly inquiry.
