Lenka Hlávková Memorial Session

On December 21, 2023 Dr. Lenka Hlávková was murdered by a gunman as she made her way out of her office, down to sing Christmas carols at the holiday party at Charles University in Prague. Many members of the AMS had worked with her in various capacities, especially considering her role as an organizer of the Med Ren conference in Prague in 2017. At the age of 49, she had served as Head of the Institute of Musicology at Charles University, and established herself as a leading scholar of medieval and renaissance music in Bohemia and in several other areas as well. She was a particularly beloved figure, and the singularity of her death—the only time someone in our profession has been killed at their workplace--leads us to propose this session even though she was not a member of our Society. The session will bring together prominent medievalists, colleagues of Lenka’s from Charles University, and others who will attempt to bring her work to life through short papers, commentaries on her work, and reminiscences. We are additionally planning to have some performances of the repertoire that was central to her work.
