I am writing to you to update you on the situation regarding our 34th annual Conference – BAM 2020 - in these most difficult times caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Firstly, I would like to extend sincere sympathy to all those members in our community who have been sadly affected by the virus.
In the British Academy of Management our core values of Inclusivity and Opportunity are very important to us, because these are not only what matter to our community but also what make our community. Watching the pandemic unfold, it is clear that we cannot easily return to our normal ways of doing things and, for many people, the idea of joining a large physical gathering even in September will not be comfortable. The safety of our members is paramount in our consideration. As a result, the Academy’s Executive has agreed that we will postpone our annual BAM Conference until September 2021, when we will gather in Manchester. We are immensely grateful to the University of Manchester and the Alliance Manchester Business School for their support in enabling this to happen.
Nonetheless, we do not want to completely remove the opportunity for our community to engage this September. We appreciate that many members have strong and valid reasons for wanting us to provide an opportunity to share their work this year. So, the Executive Committee has been working with the BAM office team and Professor Joseph Lampel and the 2020 Conference Committee to find alternative ways in which we might be able to support our community.
We have sought out best practice guidance with regard to staging online activities, bearing in mind our limited in-house technical capacity and we would like to share with you our plan for a virtual event – a ‘Conference in the Cloud’ - which will take place from 2nd – 4th September 2020. It can’t be the full, well-loved and exhilarating BAM face-to-face Conference experience, but there will be a good opportunity for sharing, celebrating and coming together across the globe, with keynote addresses, workshops and panel sessions and some track-organised sessions, using new technology. Look out for more information soon!
In the meantime, if you have a paper accepted this year, we will offer you two options:
- Either Have it included in our 2020 virtual ‘Conference in the Cloud’ for asynchronous presentation and feedback, as well as publication in the 2020 Proceedings.
- Or Withdraw your paper and resubmit next year.
The fee for our Conference in the Cloud is still being calculated but will take into account the particular difficulties faced by many this year. Please look out for more details soon.
I do hope you will join us online in September for a new way of engaging. But we all look forward to coming together in a safe and healthy manner in 2021! In the meantime, I hope you and your families remain safe and well during these very difficult times.
